How Stretching Can Reduce Back Pain

If you are someone who suffers from back pain, or if you know someone else who does, you are probably aware of how much it can affect someone’s life. Back pain often will have an affect on day to day activities, but it can also play a huge role in how people sleep. Some people have back pain for only a short period of time, while for others, it might be a chronic issue. No matter the case, regular and pointed stretching can reduce back pain.

It can also prevent back pain from reoccuring in the future.

When back and abdominal muscles are weak, back pain often gets worse. Weak back muscles also are more prone to injury. Joints and muscles that are well stretched are more flexible, meaning they are less likely to succumb to these injuries. In other words, when muscles aren’t flexible or well stretched, the likelihood of injuries such as sprains will increase.

Stretches that will help back pain should focus mainly on the back and abdominal muscles. It is also important to stretch your upper legs, since your legs are what supports you when you are walking and moving. Building these muscles will also come in handy if you ever need to lift something because they will be conditioned to be stronger.

Not only does stretching help build muscle and flexibility, it also helps reduce tension. Many people tend to hold all of their stress in their back. By taking the time to stretch every day, you will be relieving some of that tension, therefore reducing the pain you might feel if it is caused by stress. Sometimes the instinct for back pain is to stay in one spot because that’s what feels comfortable, but in reality, this can make it even worse. Even getting up off the couch and walking around and moving is more beneficial than sitting in one spot all day.

If you are new to stretching, start out slow and don’t over do it. Start stretching for just a few minutes at a time, every day. Over time, your flexibility will increase. The strength in your muscles will also increase. As this happens, you will be able to stretch more and for longer periods of time. The most important thing is to find stretches that fit your needs. Keep in mind that exercise is supposed to help, not cause more pain. There’s nothing wrong with modifying exercises if needed.
